In Gujarat, India, in the town of Patan, there is a stepwell called Rani ki Vav. The banks of Saraswati River are where it is situated. It was built by Udayamati, the wife of Bhima I, the Chaulukya ruler of the eleventh century. The Archaeological Survey of India restored it in the 1980s after it had been silted up and rediscovered in the 1940s. Since 2014, it has been included on Indian-list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With its sculptures of several Hindu deities, the stepwell is shaped like an underground shrine or inverted temple, symbolizing the sanctity of water. It has sculptural panels and steps on seven different levels. These panels blend religious, secular, and symbolic elements in more than 500 major sculptures and more than 1,000 minor ones. When the Chaulukya dynasty was in power, Rani ki Vav was built. It is situated alongside the Saraswati River. The step-well is mentioned in the Prabandha-Chintamani composition of 1304 by Jain monk Merutunga. It states that the stepwell was finished 20 years after it was commissioned in 1063. It is widely believed that Udayamati, the queen of Bhima I, constructed it in his honor between 1022 and 1064 AD. It was likely finished by Udayamati and Karna following his passing, however it is debatable if she was widowed when she ordered it. Because of its architectural resemblance to the Vimalavasahi temple on Mount Abu, which was constructed in the same year, the Commissariat dates its construction to 1032. The ASI has conserved Rani ki Vav and designated it as a Monument of National Importance. On June 22, 2014, it was included in Indian-list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. #History#Architecture
