A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi, also known as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is situated in the town of Hampi in the Vijayanagara district in east-central Karnataka, India. The Ramayana and the Hindu Puranas refer to Hampi as Pampa Devi Tirtha Kshetra, indicating that it existed before the Vijayanagara Empire. With the Virupaksha Temple, an operating monastery connected to Adi Shankara, and other old city landmarks, Hampi remains a religious hub. From 1336 until its abandonment in 1565, the capital of Vijayanagara Empire was Hampi. The city was fortified. According to chronicles written by Persian and European explorers, especially the Portuguese, Hampi was a thriving, affluent, and opulent city next to the Tungabhadra River, with a large number of temples, farms, and marketplaces. By 1500, Hampi-Vijayanagara is thought to have become the second-biggest city in the world, after Beijing, and most likely the richest metropolis in India, drawing traders from Portugal and Persia. The name Hampi is the English equivalent of the Kannada word Hampe, which was taken from the former name of the Tungabhadra River, Pampa. The Vijayanagara ruins are a subgroup of the Hampi structures that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the Vijayanagara era, roughly all of the monuments were constructed between 1336 and 1570 CE. The complex spans 41.5 square kilometers and has over 1,600 monuments. The majority of the monuments are Hindu; reliefs and artwork portraying Hindu deities and themes from Hindu texts may be seen in temples and public buildings like tanks and marketplaces. The predominant architectural style is Dravidian, which has its roots in the advancements in Hindu arts and architecture in the Deccan during the second half of the first millennium. There are also six Jain temples. The architecture is constructed using the plentiful native stone. The ceilings of some of the Virupaksha temple complex and the pillars of the Ramachandra temple are examples of the arts that emerged during the reign of Hoysala Empire in the south during the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. #History #Architecture
