The famous Middle Persian Treatise Wizārišn ī Čatrang i.e. Treatise on Chess was written by Bozorgmehr, who was a Minister in Court of Sassanian King Kavad I and later under his son and successor Khosrow I (539-579 A.D.) as well. Chess was believed to be introduced in Sassanid Iran from India (during Gupta Empire) as Chatrang (Shatranj) (Sanskrit: चतुरङ्ग; Caturaṅga) during the reign of Khosrow I or Anushirvan or Nosherwan Ādel (As Mentioned in Shahnameh by Ferdowsi). The treatise of Bozorgmehr is also known as Chatrang Nama ("Book of Chess"). The word Checkmate comes from English pronunciation of Shah-Mat meaning - King is Frozen - in Persian. Bozorgmehr is believed to continue as a military general (Spahbed) of Khwarasan under the rule of Hormizd IV as well, the successor of Khosrow I. The descendants of Bozorgmehr continued to be in service till the last Sasanian shah, Yazdegerd III (632–651 A.D.) and his grandson Valash ruled Tabaristan till 673 A.D. Bozorgmehr can be aptly described as a Sage as well as a Great Dignitary of Iran, belonging to the House of Karen. The name Bozorgmehr translates into either as – A Large Sun – or as – One of Great Kindness.
