Lahore, located in the northwestern part of the Indian Subcontinent, has a long and documented history. Oral tales claim that Lava, the son of Hindu God Rama, was the one who established the city and gave it the name Lahore. A deserted temple honouring Lava is located inside Lahore Fort. The Ravi River, which flows through northern Lahore, is alo believed to be named after Goddes Durga i.e. in honour of the Hindu goddess. An area depicted as spreading along the rivers Bidastes or Vitasta i.e. Jhelum, Sandabal or Chandra Bhaga i.e. Chenab and Adris or Iravati i.e. Ravi is where Labokla, a city, is located was mentioned by Ptolemy. Ptolemy, the renowned astronomer and geographer, thus mentioned of Labokla or Lahore in his Geographia. Kshatriyas and descendants of King Luv were grouped together and became known as Luvanam, which was also referred to as Luvana, around 580 BC, when King Bimbisara ruled South Asia. The Loharana ( the masters of swords; or iron i.e. Loha ) chiefs ( called Rana), which eventually became Lohana, were the Luvanas from Loharghat. In his journey journal, the Chinese traveller Faxian, who toured South Asia between 337 and 472 CE, describes the Lohana as a courageous people that rules the northwest region of that continent. In the eleventh century A.D., another Chinese explorer named Kurmang describes the Lohrana kingdom as a strong force. The Chinese explorer Hieun Tsang describes a vast city with many thousands of families, primarily Brahmans, located on the eastern boundary of the kingdom of Cheka, which he claims stretched from the Indus to the Beas. Hieun Tsang visited the Punjab in 630 AD. Col. Todd, an expert on Rajasthani history, also says that the Lohanas are one of the original Kshatriya communities.
