Spartacus (111-71 BCE) was a Gladiator of Thracian origin and led a major revolt of the slave-population against the Roman Republic known as the "Third Servile War". In this revolt he was aided by other gladiators namely Crixus, Gannicus, Castus etc. This Uprising is often viewed as the Revolt of the Oppressed-Classes of the society against an Oligarchy and have influenced many Political and Social thinkers in later history! Spartacus was believed to be of Thracian origin from the Nomadic Group. The wife of Spartacus was believed to be a Prophetess and was enslaved along with him. The Third Servile War was fought between 73-71 BCE and on the Rebel side was manned by an approximate 120,000 people, with slaves and gladiators along with many non-combatants. The Capuan Revolt saw the escape of group of gladiators including Spartacus from the Capuan school of Gladiators run by Lentulus Batiatus. Soon more and more slaves swelled their ranks and the praetorian armies of Republic were defeated at Mount Vesuvius. The Roman Consular Armies suffered further defeat at Battle of Picenum in 72 BC. Roman fortune begin to turn under Marcus Licinius Crassus, who inflicted initial defeat to Spartacus either in region Picenum or at Samnium. The rebel forces of Spartacus made an eventual last-stand at Battle of the Silarius River and were almost all killed in the Battlefield. Historians believe Spartacus too died in the Battlefield, though his body was never found.
