At the end of the eighteenth century, the 3/4 (three-fourth)-time folk dance known as the Ländler gained popularity in Slovenia, German Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria. This is a partner dance that emphasises hopping and stamping a lot. It might only be instrumental or include vocals, occasionally with yodeling. The Ländler was speeded up and made more graceful as dance halls became common in Europe during the nineteenth century, and the men stopped wearing the hobnail boots they used to dance it in. It is believed to have impacted the creation of the waltz along with a variety of other folk dances from Germany and Bohemia. Several classical composers, such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Anton Bruckner, composed or included Ländler into their works. Gustav Mahler opted to use a Ländler in instead of the menuet in a number of his compositions. Ländlers are folk songs from Carinthia that are referenced in works like  Violin Concerto of Alban Berg and Act II of his opera Wozzeck. A Ländler-styled zither is heard in the Johann Strauss II waltz Tales from the Vienna Woods. In the sequence where a dance night is taking place in the Hall in the Peter Grimes of Britten, a Ländler is present. The lead characters Maria and Captain von Trapp dance a Ländler in a sequence from the Broadway musical The Sound of Music!
