The trembita is a wooden alpine trumpet. Highlanders called Hutsuls from western Ukraine, eastern Poland, Slovakia, and northern Romania frequently use it. It is referred to as a trombita (in the south of Poland), a bazuna (in the north), or a ligawka (in central Poland). A trembita was a signaling instrument used largely by mountain people known as Hutsuls and Gorals in the Carpathians to declare deaths, funerals, and weddings. The cylinder is fashioned from a long, straight wood of pine or spruce that has been split in half to carve out the core—ideally, one that has been struck by lightning. The portions are then covered in birch bark or osier rings after being rejoined once more. Shepherds also employ it to communicate and notify in the wooded highlands, as well as to lead sheep and dogs. Due to its small barrel and very slight flare, the trembita has a quality that is far brighter than that of the alpenhorn. The trembita produces pure natural harmonic series of the open pipe since it lacks any sideway apertures. Due to the tiny diameter of the bore in comparison to the length, the upper harmonics can be achieved more easily. Trembita is still often used today in Ukrainian ethnic ensembles and as a recurring device in the Ukrainian folk orchestra.
