The Wendish soldiers of the temple-fortress of Arkona and the Danish and Pommeranian forces under Valdemar I engaged in a brief eight-day siege known as the Siege of Arkona. The Danish forces emerged victorious, and the remainder of Rügen submitted as a result. The chronicler Saxo Grammaticus claims in Gesta Danorum that the siege lasted for just eight days. The Wendish defenders apparently had to devote a large percentage of their troops to put out a fire that started beneath one of the fortress-towers, which is why the siege was so brief. King Valdemar launched a full-scale assault when Bishop Absalon pushed him to do so. The preoccupied Wends were exploited by the Danish soldiers, who were unable to stop the Danes from capturing the gate and the stronghold. The huge four-headed statue of Svetovit was first chopped to pieces and then burned as the Danes pillaged the settlement and demolished the temple. The island fell to Danish authority once the fortress was captured. The principality of Rügen was founded by the triumphant Danes, with Valdemar as its king and Jaromar I as its prince. The islanders were compelled to construct new Christian churches, and everyone on the island was baptized and christened. This success of the crusade revived the idea of crusades in the area and appeared to reassure the Christian world that subjugation was the only way to convert the pagans of northeastern Europe to Christianity.
