The Battle of Helgeå, also known as the Battle of the Holy River, was a naval conflict in 1026 between Danish and English forces and a combined Norwegian and Swedish force at the estuary of the river Helge in Sweden or Denmark. King Olaf II of Norway and King Anund Jacob of Sweden capitalized on the involvement of Danish King Cnut in England by launching raids on the Danish in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish and Norwegian navies, led by monarchs Anund Jacob and Olaf II, waited up the river for the navy of King Cnut, which was commanded by Danish earl Ulf Jarl. The navy of Cnut was vast, with his own ship said to be 80 metres long. The kings of Sweden and Norway ordered the construction of a massive peat and lumber dam on the river. When the Danish fleet arrived, the water was released, and many Danes and Englishmen drowned in the flood. However, the majority of the fleet of Cnut was located outside the river harbor. After the ships in the harbor were destroyed, the rest of the fleet assembled from all directions. The kings Olaf and Anund Jacob, realizing that they had achieved all of the victory that fate had enabled them to achieve for the time being, ordered their ships to retreat. If the conflict had been reiterated they would have lost a significant number of troops because Cnut had more ships. King Cnut did not pursue them. This left Cnut as the dominating lord of Scandinavia. Following the war, Cnut controlled the key provinces of Sweden around Lake Mälaren, where he had his own coinage struck in Sigtuna. #History
