The Hill of Tara is a hill that has served as a traditional Irish ritualistic and burial site close to Skryne in County Meath. The hill is known by custom as the location of the coronation of the High Kings of Ireland and seat; it also occurs in Irish mythology. Various embankments and monuments from the Neolithic to the Iron Age can be seen at Tara. Tara is a preserved national monument that is cared for by the Office of Public Works, a department of the Irish government. Tara is a portion of a broader ancient landscape. The Lia Fáil, which translates to -- Stone of Destiny, is a stone at the Inauguration Mound on the Hill of Tara that was used as the coronation stone of the Irish High Kings. Coronation Stone of Tara is another name for it. Up to Muirchertach mac Ercae, around 500 CE, all of the monarchs of Ireland, as per legend, were installed on the stone for their coronations. The Mound of the Hostages, also known as Dumha na nGiall, is the oldest surviving structure and was constructed approximately 3,200 BC as a Neolithic passage burial. On the summit, a sizable double timber circle, sometimes known as the — Wood Henge, was constructed during the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. It encircled the Mound of the Hostages and had a diameter of 250 metres. Around Samhain i.e. the Gaelic holiday signalling the beginning of winter and Imbolc i.e. the festival signalling the beginning of spring, the passage of the Mound of the Hostages coincides with daybreak. According to Irish myth, the divine Tuatha Dé Danann delivered the Stone of Destiny at Tara to Ireland and promised that it would cry out under the foot of the true monarch. The goddess of suzerainty of Tara was Medb Lethderg. The tenure of Diarmait mac Cerbaill, a real-life king of Tara who reigned in the sixth century and was regarded as particularly significant by mediaeval writers, is represented in the stories of High King, which reflect the cult of the sanctified royalty of Tara.
