Isildur was brother of Anárion and eldest son of Elendil. While their father lived in Arnor in the north, he and Anárion built and shared control of Gondor in the south. Isildur cut the One Ring from grasp of Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance, but he refused to destroy it. The Ring was lost for about 2,500 years after Orcs killed Isildur in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields.
