The village of Brough in Cumbria, England, is home to the ruined castle known as Brough Castle. In order to guard a vital route through the Pennine Mountains, William Rufus constructed the castle in the former Roman fort of Verterae circa 1092. During the Great Revolt against Henry II in 1174, the Scots assaulted and demolished the original motte and bailey stronghold.
