Located in Tonbridge, Kent, England, Tonbridge Castle dates back to the 13th century. Richard Fitz Gilbert was given land in Kent to protect the Medway River crossing after the Norman Conquest. On the spot, he built a basic Motte-and-bailey castle. Fifty thousand tonnes of earth were hauled in order to dig the moat and build the motte.
