Ever since 12th century, Khors, a Slavic god with relatively ambiguous functions, has been described. Typically seen as a Solar divinity, but occasionally also seen as a Moon deity. After Perun, Khors is one of the Slavic gods that is most commonly referenced. Khors was predominantly shown in the 12th-century Primary Chronicle letopis among other gods for whom Vladimir the Great had statues erected, including Perun, Stribog, Dazhbog, Simargl, and Mokosh. The meaning of the theonym is likewise uncertain; it has typically believd to have been derived from the Iranian term for sun, such as the Persian xoršid, or the Ossetian Xor, although contemporary linguists have sharply criticised this theory and suggested several native origin in its place. Some academics have suggested that the etymological origin of the theonym as Slavic. Old Russian Хорcъ Serbian Hrs, Old Polish *Kars and *Chars, and others are all derivations of the adjective *kъrsъ, which means — skinny. This reconstruction is linguistically in line with the lunar perception as —thin, which may have been connected to lunar cycles—and is etymologically accurate. The solar attributes are most frequently attributed to Khors by academics who assume an Iranian derivation. The fundamental contention, regardless of the precise nature of the source of the theonym, is that it originally meant — sun. Some academics who also subscribe to an Iranian etymological origin hold the view that Chors was a Lunar god and that the name he was given had nothing to do with the rays of the sun and everything to do with that of the moon. The Prot-Indo European origin of the theonym is another theory.
