Ancient Irish Goddess Macha is connected to the province of Ulster, especially the places of Navan Fort and Armagh. Irish mythology and folklore have a number of Macha characters, all of whom are thought to be descended from the same deity. She is allegedly one of the Three Morrígna, a group of three sisters. Macha is linked to the earth, fertility, royalty, war and horses like other sovereign deities. Three Machas are discussed by Proinsias Mac Cana: Queen Macha, wife of Cimbáeth, Macha wife of Crunnchu and Macha wife of Nemed, who was responsible for the debasement of the Ulstermen. Macha Mong Ruad is also added to the list making it four. The etymologically connected word Machair, used in contemporary Scottish Gaelic, describes a fertile lush landscape that is continuously trodden upon and grazed by livestock. Despite the fact that it says nothing about her, a poem in the Lebor Gabála Érenn names Macha as one of the daughters of Partholón who led the first settlement of Ireland. According to a number of traditions, a second Macha was the wife of Nemed and was in charge of the second settlement in Ireland. Twelve years after their arrival in Ireland, she was the first of the folks of Nemed to pass away. The locals of Nemed cleared the nearby forest and gave it the name Magh Mhacha i.e. the Plain of Macha. She is referred to as the raven of the incursions, the spreader of all perfections and the daughter of red-weaponed Aed. Numerous ancient texts mention Macha as the daughter of Ernmas of the Tuatha Dé Danann. She and her sisters by the name Badb and Morrigu are frequently discussed simultaneously.
