The Alans were a North Caucasus nomadic pastoral people in the ancient and medieval periods. They are typically included under the Sarmatians and may be linked to the Massagetae. The Alans have been linked by contemporary historians to the Central Asian Aorsi and Yancai in Chinese and Roman sources respectively. The Alans are recorded by Roman records in the 1st century CE after migrating westward and establishing themselves as the main group among the Sarmatians on the Pontic-Caspian steppe. They had inhabited the northern region of the Black Sea at that point of time, and they often attacked the Roman provinces in the Caucasus and the Parthian Empire. The Goths took control of the Pontic Steppe from the Alans during the period of 215-250 CE. Many of the Alans moved westward with various Germanic tribes after the Hunnic victory over the Goths in the Pontic Steppe in 375 CE. Together with the Vandals and Suebi, they traversed the Rhine in 406 CE, landing in Orléans and Valence. They crossed the Pyrenees into the Iberian Peninsula with the Vandals and Suebi around 409 CE, establishing in Lusitania and Hispania Carthaginensis. After being decisively routed by the Visigoths in 418 CE, the Iberian Alans gave up control to the Hasdingi Vandals. The Vandals and Alans entered North Africa over the Strait of Gibraltar in 428 CE, where they established a kingdom that lasted until Justinian I of the Byzantine Empire conquered it in 534 CE. The mighty kingdom of Alania was established in the North Caucasus by the Alans who remained under Hunnic domination and lasted until the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century. These Alans are regarded by certain Ossetian scholars as the predecessors of the contemporary Ossetians. The Scytho-Sarmatian language, which the Alans spoke as their native tongue, was the ancestor of the contemporary Ossetian language.
