The Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religions all reference the holy being and demigod Garuda. He is the child of Vinata and that of the sage Kashyapa. He is the younger brother of Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun. Other books including the Puranas and the Vedas also make reference to Garuda. As the mount (Vahana) of the Hindu God Vishnu is the most common representation of Garuda. Additionally, the Devas, Daityas, Danavas, and Yakshas are half-brothers to Garuda. Garuda is mentioned as the king of birds and has kite-like resemblance. He is depicted either as an anthropomorphic being (a man with wings and some bird-like features) or in zoomorphic shape (a huge bird with partially wide wings). Garuda is typically portrayed as a defender who can move quickly anyplace, is constantly on guard, and is the opponent of all serpents. He goes by the names Tarkshya and Vainateya as well. Garuda, considered the king of birds in Hinduism, is a heavenly sun-bird that resembles an eagle. The Rigveda makes reference to a Garutman, a celestial Daeva with wings. The Shatapatha Brahmana integrated within Yajurveda text mentions Garuda as the embodiment of bravery. The Mahabharata claims that Garutman is identical to Garuda and goes on to describe him as quick, able to assume any form, and able to enter any location. In the epics, he is a strong creature whose wings can stop heaven, earth, and hell from spinning. He is said to as the mount of Hindu God Vishnu and usually they are depicted together.
