In Iranian mythology, Kaveh the Blacksmith leads an insurrection against Zahāk, a cruel foreign tyrant. Ferdowsi, a Persian poet from the tenth century, tells his life in the Shahnameh, the national epic of Iran. Legend has it that Kāveh was a blacksmith who, after losing two of his children to serpents of Zahāk, started a national rebellion against the terrible alien dictator.
