The spirit of Glorfindel left toward the Halls of Mandos, where he briefly passed some time. He was re-embodied and continued to live in Valinor as a result of his heroic deeds that had saved many Elves during the Fall of Gondolin. Manwë brought him back to Middle-earth as an emissary of the Valar many years later, in SA 1600, and gave him abilities that were almost as powerful as those of the Maiar.
